Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy

Have you ever found yourself saying, "A part of me wants to make a change, but another part of me is terrified"? This feeling of inner conflict is entirely normal. In fact, it is the foundation of Internal Family Systems (IFS), a transformative, evidence-based psychotherapy that helps us understand, heal, and harmonize the different aspects of our minds.

Rather than treating symptoms as problems to be eliminated, IFS views the mind as a complex system of interacting "parts," much like members of a family. Through IFS therapy, we work together to understand these parts, heal the wounded ones, and restore balance to your inner world.

The Core Philosophy: "No Bad Parts"

In IFS, there is a fundamental belief that there are no bad parts. Every part of you has a positive intention and developed to protect you, even if the methods it uses now are causing you pain or holding you back.

When we go through difficult experiences or trauma, our parts are forced out of their natural, healthy states into roles. IFS categorizes these parts into three main groups:

Exiles (The Wounded Parts)

These are the vulnerable parts of us that carry the pain, fear, shame, or trauma from our past. Because this pain is so difficult to feel, we often lock these parts away deep within our subconscious.

Managers (The Proactive Protectors)

These parts run our day-to-day lives. Their primary job is to keep you safe and functioning. Managers might show up as the perfectionist, the inner critic, or the overachiever.

Firefighters (The Reactive Protectors)

When intense pain threatens to surface, Firefighters rush in to extinguish the emotional fire. This can look like sudden rage, binge eating, or impulsive distraction.

The Healing Power of the "Self"

Beneath all of these protective and wounded parts, everyone has a core "Self." It is your true essence, characterize by the "8 C’s":

Compassion

Curiosity

Calm

Clarity

Courage

Connectedness

Confidence

Creativity
